An Arabian Journey One Man Quest Through the Heart of the Middle East Audible Audio Edition Levison Wood Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • Travel writing at its best - a contemporary view of life around the edge of the Arabian peninsula
  • While not as fluid or adventurous as his other works, still a fine read nonetheless. Tackling the subject of the Middle East from western eyes bent on objectivity was no easy task.
  • As a fan of Wood's previous books, I found this one a bit different. Instead of the usual physical dangers posed by the elements, terrain, and fauna he encountered along the Nile, in the Himalayas, and in Central American rain forests, the risks posed in his latest adventure were caused by bullets, roadside bombs, and the headsman's sword. Traveling both on foot and aboard a camel, a fishing boat, a taxi, and, at one point, a tank, he followed the tracks of previous intrepid Western explorers such as T.E. Lawrence during his circumnavigation of this land of deserts, genies, and magic carpets. His interactions with the rag-tag protagonists in many of the disputed areas he traversed give a truer picture of the volatile situations in the region than nightly news reports often biased by political agendas. As usual, the book is enhanced by his color photographs and a map of his itinerary. Anyone trying to understand the modern enigma surrounding the cradle of civilization should find this book interesting.
  • Levison Wood is a masochist of first order. But the best kind, the highly entertaining kind. The guy walks places (places one wouldn’t really walk or even think of walking) and then writes his walking adventures down. I loved walking the Nile with him, well I sat here, he walked, I read about it, fun was had by all. And the man is no stranger to some seriously inhospitable and difficult to navigate environments, but he might have outdone himself with this trek. Notice this book isn’t titled Walking the Arabia but an Arabian Journey, since some cars or other quadrupedal modes of transportation were utilized. Some places you just can’t walk, though the man tries. Arabia (a destination name far dreamier than Middle East), it seems holds a special sort of appeal to the author, it isn’t his first journey there, but this one was undertaken is such a dangerous time to be in the region. Nevertheless, he perseveres and even manages to hit every target he sets out for himself and this book is a result. And it’s good, but was it worth risking his life for…I’m not sure. It’s enlightening, because it offers perspectives of regular people caught up or stuck in irregular circumstances. At times it’s practically war reporting. And Wood stays notably unbiased as a reporter trying to present as many varied perspectives as he can from many different sides. But it doesn’t really teach a reader who isn’t familiar with the region’s complex politics all that much and it doesn’t really offer enough to change or make up minds. I’m relatively knowledgeable on the subject, having read up on it, taken a class on it and regularly following the news and reading articles, so I suppose I expected or was hoping for more…more to learn. But where the book may not explain the situation to those outside of the know, it certainly does a great job of humanizing it, which is no small feat for such a foreign (to westerners) culture. The thing is though you just can’t help thinking that there is a streak of masochism or some sort of obsession behind Wood’s travels. I’ve encountered a version of this in myself in my need to finish every book, no matter how crappy that book may be. But Wood, of course, takes that to an entirely new level. Although he does seem to come to a sort of realization during this trip that maybe his extreme traveling days are over, but time will tell. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds another wild and crazy journey to undertake in a near future. The man is, after all, obsessed. This book is good, very good (it’s only some historical facts short of great) and I’d definitely recommend it to all the armchair travelers out there. Disappointingly, hugely so, the ARC version had no photos and his books always have photos, so that won’t be available until the print version. Just so you know.
  • A great travel story. This is the second book I have read of this author's journeys, and love the way he mixes facts with his own personal observations and questions and it is beautifully descriptive as well.
It was nice to see these Middle Eastern countries, as peoples homes, and see how daily life is for them, and not just the images we see on TV these days. We were able to meet through him, some very interesting characters who guided him through these countries.
The adventure has an easy flow as he goes through sometimes very hostile situations, whether it is Warring parties or stretches of deserts that need to be crossed.
He circumnavigation the Arabian Peninsula, taking in thirteen Middle Eastern Countries, starting in Northern Syria to Lebanon, following at times the footsteps of past explorers whom he revered.
He came very close to ISIS fighting, he had tea with Hezbollah, and one of his only ways out of one place, had to cross pirate-infested waters in a wooden dhow. He meets his parents and friends in Bethlehem, for Christmas, before going to his last destination Lebanon.
I am looking forward to reading more of his books.
I would l like to thank NetGalley and Grove Atlantic for an ARC of this book.
  • I love any true or mostly true travel story. This was an informative read with interesting facts. It's well written and researched. The characters are likeable and engaging. Overall it's a good read. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
  • This is an excellent addition to Wood's journeys. He offers an eye-opening view of the current life in the Middle East as well as the history of exploration in this area. I enjoyed reading about the author's trials and tribulations as he attempts to travel around and through war zones and meet locals.

  • Wow. A practical guide to turning creative impulses into creative expressions that's also a good read? YES! Deep Creativity features three authors sharing their own creative struggles and successes--with a sense of humility and humor that makes the reader feel a part of creative possibilities, rather than apart from. It's one of a kind---in more ways than one.
  • Deborah's books have depth and soul! She writes from a wisdom that stimulates and awakens the depth of my own creativity and inner wisdom!
  • I am not a “crunchy granola milennial” as one reviewer insisted I had to be in order to like this book, however I didn’t just like this book... I loved it! And I will be sharing it with my colleagues in the very creative process of SoulCollage®️.

The sections are divided into topics such as The Way of Love, The Way of the Muse, The Way of Fire, The Way of Practice, and so on. I found the depth of this book to be rich and full of new wisdom on a topic that I am so passionate about. The suggested activities were right up my alley!

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

What to do, see and eat in Palermo.

The Palermo issue will give all this information, plus more, much more an insight into the traditions, the stories, the people and the cooking.

Be a traveler, not a tourist!

The Gourmet Mag is a seasonal (4 issues per year) cookbook and lifestyle magazine made in Italy.

A journal about cooking. living and exploring Italy.

In this issue, we will explore a magical Sicilian city. A place where many of my friends (and myself as well) admit they would move to if they had the chance.

Palermo is a charming, multicultural, elegant lady, with a lot of interesting things to say and so good at cooking!

We will explore the city as if we were there together, walking around the old markets, talking to locals, tasting their food and accessing their heritage.

The churches are full of history and art; noble palaces are dreamy; restaurants and street food are delicious; cultural gems and artistic meccas are everywhere.

There are a lot of things to do in Palermo, so much that a month wouldn't be enough to cover them all. But we will spend 48 hours hunting la creme de la creme.

Back home, Easter is going to be our bridge towards Spring. We will celebrate with Italian recipes, traditions, and beautiful decor ideas.

I know roses are a Spring clichè, but what an astonishing, magical clichè.
We will nourish our eyes and our most intimate soul with rosy pictures, by a visit to Rome's Rose garden and a little rosy cooking.

After years of searching, you'll find THE ONE, your future sweetheart Mr. Tuna! Sicily will teach us how to cook it properly, how to exalt its flavor and texture, and how to enjoy a tuna meal. You'll come back for seconds... and thirds -).

There's more, but let's leave a little something to the imagination...

Enjoy Palermo and the surprises in the mag!

Claudia

"At once, both a personal narrative/tour of Palermo, and a collection of carefully chosen and themed food insights and recipes - making this a gourmet delight. It is the personal nature of this indie publication that makes it extra special. One reviewer mentioned the less-than-perfect use of the English language, at times. However, I consider that factor to make the messages and stories even more charming.
I have sent copies ( as gifts) to friends who love “all things Italian”, as well as sunk deep into this mag myself, to prop up my armchair travels. This Palermo issue is no exception. Lovely photography, delightful exposure to regional food and related culture, and, what I like most of all, the personal message and stories that the author (and designer) of this publication brings to the fore.
The Palermo issue provided a terrific travelogue with photos of the city and a nice profile of poets, art, markets, gardens, flowers like roses and wisteria, and so on. The regional recipes for sardines, caponata, swordfish wraps, tuna with bittersweet onions, and ricotta pie were all tempting. The references to Easter food culture and sweet delicacies like the Sicilian Easter Cake, Cherry & Pistachio Pavlova, and Chocolate Turkish salami…… are an interesting read.
But it’s the accompanying photography that really makes this magazine most tempting. I recommend it and look forward to the next issue. Each one has been a treat."

Gourmet Mag the Palermo Issue Italian food recipes traditions and lifestyle edition by Claudia Rinaldi Annamaria Schram Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews

  • I was delighted when I stumbled across Gourmet Mag. A combination travelogue and cookery magazine focused on Italy sounded right up my alley. The arrival of spring sounded like the perfect time, moreover, for an issue focused on Palermo. So when the email announcing its release arrived, I ordered it right away.

    The Good
There are some great recipes, or at least recipes that look great at first glance. (Cookbook reviews from people who haven't lit the stove book in hand are always suspect; you have been warned.)
There are also some wonderful photographs, especially the outdoor shots, and the overall feel of the magazine is solid and well-constructed. There are some interesting historical and cultural tidbits.

    The Bad
The publication needs an English-language editor. There is one listed in the magazine, but I cannot for the life of me ascertain what she did. All of the text has plainly been written by someone who speaks English as a second language. That is, it is mostly intelligible, but not idiomatic. The word choice in places is sufficiently odd so as to create significant doubt as to what the writer was even intending to convey. It reminds me of the English I encountered on signs and in conversation in Italy many Italians speak English, and they generally do so well, by and large. But something about the grammatical differences in the two tongues makes it difficult for Italians to capture the right feel of English, or the right form of conventional English phrases. A literate native speaker ought to be able to tweak this English-by-Italians into pleasant English with little effort. But that hasn't been done here, and the overall effect is a text difficult to read.

The travel-focused parts of the magazine are not accompanied by sufficient photographs. There were whole paragraphs (and this is not long-form journalism; a few paragraphs is a big portion of the text) discussing buildings or architectural elements that were not depicted. A longer-form essay giving a more vivid written picture of the city could have stood in place of more photographs, but the text that was there was so brief that it read like a caption for missing photos. And there was little context given for the handful of buildings and neighborhoods mentioned the lack of a map was conspicuous.

While the exterior photographs were well done, the food photographs were hit or miss.

For an issue supposedly dedicated to Palermo, a substantial portion of it had nothing to do with that town, or with Sicily at all. Many of the recipes and tidbits on cultural phenomena were drawn from other places in Italy. That would be fine, of course, if it didn't say "Palermo" there "on the tin." Moreover, many of the notes on culture and custom expressly mentioned that they had been composed based on Google research. I could do that myself. And to top it off, the content itself is suspect in places I have never been in the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pieta in Palermo, but I know that a series of paintings focusing on a *woman* in a Dominican habit is unlikely to be entitled "the Apotheosis of San Domenico." (Cf. the lack of editing, supra if you're going to translate, translate, and make that "St. Dominic.")

Finally, the typesetting needs work. The text is too small and most of it is placed against a background that provides insufficient contrast. And anyone who wants to be taken even halfway seriously should not use emoticons in written material. The languages of Chaucer and Dante are both capable of so much more.

The bottom line is that this is a fun, fascinating project that I wish well and want to enjoy. But if it wants to be worth $20 an issue, it needs to step it up a notch or two.
  • I found this Cookbook REFRESHING and so enjoyable I sat down on a rainy afternoon and read it from cover to cover!
The Photography is gorgeous and her humor in her words most playful and REAL!You can tell she has a LOVE of FOOD and enjoys the history behind the Food!Who knew WISTERIA was named after a Shepard Girl who was very very sad!I loved the Hints of History and the content of the food and how it came to be!I can not wait to try the Swordfish Wraps and the Turkish Salami.THANK you for another wonderful issue to add to my collection!I look forward to the SUMMER EDITION!
  • Love learning, reading cookbooks and trying recipes

The Gourmet Magazines are a breath of fresh air, beauty and ideas. Cheers to the team
  • What a pleasant surprise…I expected to find interesting Sicilian recipes, cooking techniques and the like in “Gourmet Mag” and of course they were there, but what I did not expect was how these were being woven together into a virtual montage. Palermo’s cultural artifacts and its scents, sights, and sounds were not just afterthoughts but yielded this larger motif, and my reading was the beginning of my acculturation and assimilation into their lifestyle. While walking through the neighborhoods, admiring the architecture, and learning about the churches the infusion of the cuisine of the street vendor, bakeries, and restaurants all came together. Some of the recipes I will try and others I’ll keep at a distance but overall they were straightforward, and I believe that the ingredients are available locally. It would be interesting to know more about how North Africa influenced their cuisine with their use of raisins, pistachio nuts and…Very enjoyable and time well spent.

  • Ciao! Truly a piece of art, the visuals alone will captivate you! It reads like a diary, full of secrets and historic prose. I cannot wait to make the pavlova for my own ballerina; I will post the picture when I do! However I have no doubt it will pale in comparison to what is seen in the pages of this stunning magazine. It is without a doubt a gentle reminder to slow down, smell the roses, sip prosecco from a 'friend of a friend' and immerse yourself in all that is good and kind to the soul.
  • This quarterly magazine is very well done. Beautiful and large pictures; lots of information about the region. And recipes that look really tasty. Many many pages, for several hours of enjoyment.

Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women Sarah Bargiela Sophie Standing 9781785925665 Books Reviews

  • The full title of this graphic novel should give you a pretty strong idea of what it covers. It’s all about autistic women, their differences from the typical expectations of autism, and how that results in them blending in better (and thus being less likely to be identified and/or diagnosed).
There were a lot of things I didn’t know about autism in women that I learned while reading this. It was incredibly informative, while still being very approachable.
I like that they chose to talk about the subject in a visual way, as it made everything feel more casual and comfortable to talk about. It felt less like I was reading a textbook and more like I was reading about real people (which was actually the case).
I found this to be a very informative, and enlightening graphic novel. It was nice to take a break from reading fiction and instead learn something true and important.
  • Camouflage by Sarah Bargiela is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in late February.

Exploring concepts through the experiences of 4 autistic women in comic book form, like the belief that girls and women are less likely to be diagnosed due to their brains supposedly wired for empathy and being able to echo social cues more effectively; consistency in habit and routine; seeking/avoiding sensory activities and having keen interests; internalizing emotions and masking one’s identity in order to appear normal; developing assertiveness during friendships and relationships; and finding community within their diagnosis. The palette offered heathered/spotty pastel hues with focal points of coral, hunter green and black, and, altogether, it was too short and I wanted more!
  • Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is a completely necessary teaching tool, for kids and adults alike. This nonfiction guide beautifully and intellectually illustrates how autism manifests in women and how women’s experiences are often completely different from men’s.

The artwork is very modern and adds a lot to the story. The style makes it easier to understand these women’s experiences through a variety of panel layouts and a combination of dialogue, visual aids, and artistic representation of the facts.

The stories in Camouflage are extremely empowering, and as a guide, this is a great start to understanding the complexities of autism.

NOTE I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
  • While the text in Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is probably comparable to a magazine article or blog post in length (and therefore is a very quick read), the illustrations fill out the information and help to humanize this topic.

We get to hear from a few different autistic women about some of the challenges and differences that they face in life. There is also some information about the differences in the ways that autistic men and autistic women present their symptoms, which can lead to women being underdiagnosed.

Despite its short length, I found it fairly informative and a good resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the gender differences in autistic people, and the lived experiences of autistic women.

(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)
  • This is well-researched, impeccably presented GN about how autism can present itself in young girls and woman. Through its clever use of illustration to help readers understand concepts and words they may be unfamiliar with, to its inclusion of stories from those with Autism--this book has helped me understand a topic I believe I knew all too well. This GN toes the line between presenting readers with enough information to feel like they understand more about the topic without feeling bogged down too much scholarly language. As a twin to a sister with Autism, I feel like I can understand her better and that's an invaluable gift.
  • I didn't know what to expect going into reading this and I came away surprised. I learned a lot about autism in women! I would give this book 3.5 stars.

This was a great medium for teaching about the subject matter and I enjoyed the anecdotal approach. One big hang-up I have about the book is how gender essentialist it is about sex differences. The author makes overarching generalizations about the societally influenced behavior of cis-men and cis-women (assumed that this is what she is talking about, as she does not indicate otherwise) without many citations to support these assertions. I almost stopped reading because of the generalizations - aren't we past an antiquated science supporting the separation of gender into two categories?

Other than the gendered nonsense, I enjoyed this book and the information it offered.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of Camouflage and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
  • Obviously there’s only so much information that you can fit into a fifty page graphic novel, but I think this is a great jumping off point. Bargiela uses research studies with the personal experiences of women diagnosed to be on the spectrum to bring us informative graphic and stories about women with autism. She covers the difference between behaviors in men and women, likely a cause for why women may be under-diagnosed. I read a similar article in the past about the difference in behaviors for ADHD and I find it interesting to compare the differences (and also distressing that women can get ignored because they don’t check the “usual” boxes). This quick, easy to digest guide is a good starting point for understanding different women. Thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for the eARC.

The Fates Divide Carve the Mark Veronica Roth Books Reviews

  • I was a little bit disappointed in this series when I finished. I read through it all and wanted to love it but it felt like something kept holding me back from fully buying into the story. The universe Roth created was such a fantastic place to dive into and expand upon but not enough was learned in this series.

    What I liked
    - The idea of the current is such an interesting and unique idea. It was cool that everyone had somewhat unique abilities that we're overpowered and take precedence over the story.
    - The two main planets in the story Ogra and Thuvhe (Urek) were well thought out with interesting visuals.
    - Through all of my dislikes I still liked both Cyra & Akos at the end.
    - Roth did a very good job of writing from different points of view, I feel like different points of view is very hit or miss and Roth nailed it.

    What I disliked
    - Akos sees his father as somewhat of a guiding force and is constantly seeking to save his brother Eijeh. As a reader I wanted to feel connected but I didn't have enough material to draw from on either character.
    - I thought the "relationship" between Cyra and Akos started way too early in the series and was extremely obvious. As soon as you met the characters at the beginning of the series you know that they will end up together. That would be fine, except there wasn't enough build up to actually get to that point.
    - The villain from the first book was much better even though the first book built up the 2nd books villain. There wasn't enough depth on the 2nd books villain, you saw him as pure evil and nothing else. To me a villain needs to have some ambiguity, you can't relate to him at all and strictly see him as the bad guy from the start. He had no redeeming qualities.
    - Lazmet did not have a believable role of power in the story. As it seemed, literally everyone hated him including his closest advisors. I don't believe he was going to retain power without any allies.
    - The end of the story seemed too easy. The bad guy loses with very few people dying and almost no one you care about.

Overall, I think this story and world have such a huge potential that was not fully achieved. I enjoyed the story but lament to say that it could have been so much better.
  • i enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to this one to explain more things and broaden their "world".. the first book had violence and so did this one which fit with how the characters were described, but holy cow it felt like the author randomly decided to make everyone start swearing in this book.. i felt like akos lost some of his strength and cyra could take or leave him by the end of the book.. i liked that we got to see more of the secondary characters in this book and you have to read it to find out what happens and a great plot twist about half way through, totally didn't see it coming.. i like how the author wrote sifa, you got to see how several people react to her and i like how it wasn't all wrapped up at the end with her.. she did some terrible things to her family and i like how it played out in this book..
  • When I pre-ordered this book, I was so excited to see wha th might happen as a finale to Carve the Mark.

The first half of the book was interesting, we find out Cyra's dad is alive, they travel to Ogra which we didnt know much about from the first book, and we see more character development between Cisi and Isae.

I've never read a duology. So I didnt expect what happened in the middle. Usually the twist, or the secret, that changes the way of thinking for the whole series is at the end of a TRILOGY. But when I read what was revealed in the middle...

Did NOT see that one coming. M Night Shyamalan, you might have a run for your money on this girl.

Anyways, the second half of the book was more epic, focused on trying to keep the imminent war from happening, with some interesting turns.

Overall it was a good book. The only parts I thought that didn't need to be included were Eijeh's chapters. He narrates one chapter in the middle and it's pretty pointless. But his ending narration makes sense. The epilogue and that one chapter... eh, not so much.

5 out of 5 though, awesome book.
  • Too hard to follow. Never did straighten out all the characters in my mind. Too many worlds and peoples. Fates were too confusing. The tie-in to book one was weak. I never had a clear vision of the author's mission and intent. I finished it because I'm one of those readers who has too finish reading once a book is started.
  • My Thoughts
I was so excited to see where Cyra and Akos story went with this book. We find out so many interesting things about the 2 and find out how their “fates” influence them. Elijeh, Akos brother becomes a large part of this story. Cyra and Akos become closer as they fight a war that can mean life or death for them. Will their love prevail or will they fall to their fates?

    My Rating
I give this book 4 stars. There seemed to be some filler story added that I feel it could have done without. I did like the action and the angst that the characters worked through. However the end felt rushed and I would have liked a little more elaboration. Overall great series.
  • I enjoy this series.
Issue it had been so long since I'd read the first book that I struggled to remember details and people. I spent a long while trying to remember who was who.
While the book drags in several places, it was still worth it to me.
I am fascinated by these characters and places, and I'm looking forward to the next book! (There will be another, right?)

I'm on the ground, again.
I have been punched and slammed by someone far bigger and tougher than me.

I can hear the snorts and laughter; I'm the only girl on the training squad.
"This is why someone like you should never be allowed to fight side by side with war brothers."

Still, I get up. Not complaining.
This is the life I chose.

So when a stranger challenges me to a duel two minutes later, I don't hesitate to take him up and agree to his terms that I will do something for him if I lose.

Then it all went black.

I wake up in a cell and realize with terror that I'm probably in werewolf territory, high up in the mountains.

Two hours later, I'm presented to both, the prince's step-cousin and the prince himself.

"You are lucky, you have been chosen to be our new human concubine. A rare opportunity, given only to the most worthy of women."

You've got to be kidding me?!
This was NOT what I meant by a favor!!!

"Have you bred before?"

WHAT?!

"What about sharing? Two, three men, perhaps?"

EXCUSE ME?!

"Tomorrow will be your first training."

Next thing I know, I have a royal collar attached to my neck, to denote I belong to them.

"You either walk on your feet or you will be dragged,"  says the prince.

He can't be serious.
I'm gonna kill them both.

  • A charming story about a headstrong woman who wants to become a warrior. She perseveres against all odds. Then, she is kidnapped and taken to a Wolven stronghold where she begins more intense training taught by and to women. She is also kept by a prince and his cousin for other reasons. When demons begin to attack, they will need all their training, and, a little magical assistance to survive.
A well told story with two powerful women and the men who love them.
  • I gave this one star because I didn't like the book. It had many suspenseful scenes. But just not what I was NXpicting.
  • I loved the story. Who would have thought it would turn out like it did...not me. Story of a strong woman who wants and needs to follow her own dream, even tho it is not accepted by nearly anybody. Never give up on your dreams, you never know what can happen. And against all odds to find love and strength in the enemy. Enjoyed this story very much.
  • Lilly was kidnapped from the human world by Ryker a cousin to the prince Balthen. Through many twists and turns in the storyline, Lilly vowed to kill Ryker because he took her from the only life she knew. I liked the writing by this author, but sometimes had to question the thought process, thinking it could be real.
  • Like an old Charlton Heston movie. Cecile B Demille language with very formulaic parts. Steamy but often times pointless sex and menages.
  • This book was okay, not great. There is fighting and a love story that is sort of forced to be menage against the woman's will.
  • Female character fighting tooth and nail to be accepted as a potential guard in the male dominated court. A stranger make her an offer her arrogance can not refuse and she winds up becoming property and training as a werewolf prince's champion and his advisor.
  • Being a lowly human who doesn’t take no for an answer can grate on the prince’s nerves. Will she be able to handle him and his cousin in their relationship? Falling in love with not the prince could cause issues in the long fun but can she make it all work?

Survival tips written for (and by) old farts... I decided to write down a bunch of timely wood lore tricks and preparedness advisement so they can be shared and remembered at least once more. Knowledge I have gained from a lifetime of prepping and preparing for disasters and how to live easier through hard times are explained within this book.

I bet all of us aging seniors who are of the preppier mindset or of a survivalist bent, as well as many younger folks less knowledgeable, want to know about the same things we do regarding eating well and dying easier after a mega disaster. That is, survival knowledge that we will need to know and rely on should the electrical grid ever go down and stay down. Considering just how unreliable all this newfangled technology can be and the fact that new threats are always appearing on the horizon, it is not a far stretch to say our dependency on technology is putting our very survival or daily existence in jeopardy.

We need to try to get back to our old school mindsets now and learn more about the woods or country living that some of us may have forgotten about, or some of us never learned growing up to begin with.

Whether or not you are just learning basic preparedness for the first time or remembering many an old camping trip or military deployment, there is plenty to learn here. The contents of this audiobook will teach you long term survival and food procurement, using anything but the cheapest gear best suited for the task. Even if you are on a strict fixed income and have a few minor physical disabilities, I have a plan for you and it's one that won't cost much at all to sustain you for a year or more.

This audiobook will teach you some awesome things like how to catch a fish with a twig, use nothing but a pencil sharpener to light a fire in wet woods and make a fish hook or animal trap, heat your house with the sun and a sewage line, open a can of food on the curb without a can opener, heat your house with a garbage bag, light a fire with a rain drop, defend yourself against a wild dog attack, spend a dollar on a tool that can feed you the rest of your life, or spend a hundred dollars on a piece of gear that could feed you and your family for a year using common, easy applicable food procurement skills in any suburban backyard or forested wood lot.

You will learn the skills that some of us old timers who are still kicking around will use for surviving long term and would like to be taught to the next generation. Things that are good to know, like how to take a cardboard box, a baking bag, a piece of string and catch your own dinner, cook it and boil and purify water using those three items. This book will teach you more than a few things you might not know yet, but you should for old fart survival purposes! Let us try to outlive and out think them young heathens or at least hang around long enough to teach them a better way to survive themselves!

Old Farts Survival Guide Audible Audio Edition Ron Foster T David Rutherford Ronald Foster Books Reviews

  • In this new release from Mr. Foster, there are over 500+ pages of tips, techniques, gear suggestions, and plenty of good ole' common sense as it applies to Emergency Preparedness and outdoor survival skills. This book is a non-fiction work, and contains over 30+ Chapters on subjects like disaster psychology and mental heath, fire starting, solar cooking, food collection, water purification, water distillation, homestead farming, cooking, home heating and much, much more!
Mr. Foster brings to this volume a lifetime of practical ideas and concepts, and conveys to the reader the all-important responsibility of us "old-timers" to pass on our knowledge and skills to the younger generations. As always, this work is written in Ron's classic, easy to read style....which in many ways is like sitting around a campfire with him telling stories.
There are many photos, illustrations, and various data tables that greatly help convey important concepts. While I usually purchase Mr. Foster's fiction works in format, I will be also ordering a paperback version of this volumne, as it will have a place in my Prepper Library. As I read the digital version....I got tired of 'bookmarking' pages for later review....would be much easier to just turn down the corner of a real page or read it with an old fashioned yellow highlighter!
I highly recommend this new book....and encourage all students of Emergency Preparedness to pick up a volume and learn a few new tricks....
  • Old Farts need to survive as much as anyone else. All kidding aside, this is a great book that gives the right amount of detail and illustrations to enable a person to actually do the things the author states. I plan to keep my hard copy in my bugout locker in the back of my truck. No book could possibly cover every topic concerning survival, but this one has the important stuff. The right stuff.
  • This book is the B all of preparing of any calamity from floods ,no heat or SHTF !! Very down to earth with lots of great tricks and it's fantastic for Prepper young and old.
This is a encyclopedia of modern prepping and I believe it will still be read in the next century !! It's that good.
Congratulations Mr. Foster I really believe this book will go down as the best book ever .
  • This book is great because it uses Mr Fosters off the cuff humorous approach to teaching his outlook to survival. This book will remain in my prep library.
  • This book is worth every dollar I spent on it. It teaches you how to survive when there is no electricity & everything else like how to survive in the woods & hunt for fish. It also teaches you how to live off the grid generate your own electricity and grow your own food.
  • This author has hit it on the head of the nail!
This book is refreshing how it let you KNOW prepping is not new, our grandparents were prepper`s.
And!!!!! NO ZOMBIES WERE HURT IN THE WRITING OF THIS BOOK!
  • How many of us have had a chance to sit down & listen and learn from our Grandparents or Great Grandparents who lived through the Depression & worse? This book serves to provide important lessons from that by-gone era. And is an important addition to any Preppers library. And covers just about everything one would need to know how to live when the crud hits the fan & civilization as we know it falls apart. Not everything is a high tech equipment fixes everything. But more of a down to earth fix for what is wrong now. And for you folks who think more guns & ammo fixes everything, boy are you in for a major let down. Written by a true Southern Gentleman who lives as he writes, [and is a heck of a storyteller too]
So if you are looking for just one book to have on hand, then this is the one. It is easy to read & understand written & the whole family can read & understand it as well [with no worries about what the kids are reading either] I can not recommend this book enough.
So get it, sit back with a good pot of coffee with a highlighter [I do with every new book from Ron Foster] prop your feet up and enjoy yourself with a lot of good information that may someday save not only your life, and those of your family & friends as well.
  • This book is packed with good information, and filled with photos and diagrams that help educate.
